Introduction

National Archives of India Library

National Archives of India was established in 1891 as the Imperial Record Department (IRD) at Calcutta to act as the Central Record Office. During the establishment of IRD, a Central Library was set up, so that it could function as an apex body to the Imperial Record Department and different Departmental libraries of the Government of India. Following the decision to transfer the Imperial Record Department to Delhi, the books and publications in the Central Library were sorted out and the collection which was transferred to the Imperial Record Department in New Delhi formed the core of NAI Library.

NAI Library is a specialized reference library which focuses on Medieval and Modern Indian History to complement public and private records available in NAI. It has a huge collection of rare and proscribed publications, official reports, gazettes and gazetteers, census of India and survey reports, parliamentary proceedings etc. It provides various services to the foreign Indian research scholars, Ministries, Institutions, Individuals, etc.

The NAI library system consists of six distinct libraries of NAI. The main library, located at the NAI Headquarters in New Delhi, acts as a main library, Regional Office library is situated at Bhopal, Records Centre libraries in Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Puducherry and School of Archival Studies library in New Delhi. Each of these libraries plays a unique role in the preservation and dissemination of knowledge, making the NAI library system a vital resource for those studying modern Indian history, political science, archival science, and related disciplines.
